Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoon butter or lard 
  • 2 medium onions 
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 2 tablespoon paprika 
  • 1 ½ Ib stewing beef trimmed and cut into 1″ cubes 
  • ¼ cup flour 
  • 2 cups beef broth or water 
  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes 
  • 1 teaspoon salt 
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper 
  • 1 ½ cup carrots, optional 
  • 3 cups potatoes, optional 

How to make it

  • In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the onions and cook them until they are transparent. Stir in the caraway and paprika until combined.
  • In a bowl, coat the beef with the flour. Add beef to the saucepan and brown it for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the broth, tomatoes, salt and pepper, and the carrots and potatoes if using.
  • Stir and bring to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to a simmer; cook for 1-2 hours or until tender.
